Kadhal Desam is a Tamil comedy tale of two friends that go through many ups and downs. The story revolves around the often complicated relationships between parents and children, husbands and wives, lovers and others. It has a strong message for people not to neglect their family ties. The film is directed by Karu Pazhaniappan, based on a story written by Mohanbabu with cinematography from Virendra Sivakumar. It was produced under the banner of SP Productions, becoming the first production venture of its director-producer duo. The film stars Prabhu, Vijayakanth, Sarath Babu and Nirosha in the lead roles with Srividya, Manorama and Ramaprabha playing supporting roles. The music was composed by Deva. Mohanbabu wrote the story after recalling an incident from his own life. He said that he got a call from his wife one night asking him to come home. Finding that she was crying on the other end, he panicked and enquired whether something had happened to a family member or a close friend. However it turned out that he had accidentally broken a picture of Jesus Christ which brought forth her tears. Mohanbabu said that he felt guilty for being negligent with his family and decided to write a story based on the incident. The film was announced in 1994 by SP Productions, a production company started by director-producer duo Karu Pazhaniappan and Shoba Chandrasekar. At that time, Vijayakanth's daughter Vanitha Vijayakanth was the heroine of the film which was expected to be filmed in 65 days. The producers held talks with actress Nirosha for another leading female role; she had recently appeared in "Sivasakthi" (1994) opposite Prabu alongside Raadhika. The film's shooting began in December 1994 and was expected to be completed by March 1995. Actor Sarath Babu was selected to play the main antagonist for the first time in his career. He praised Mohanbabu for his story, which was a combination of humour and sentiment. Before the film began production, Vijayakanth had suffered a leg injury during a fight sequence in his previous film "Panchatanthiram" (1994), so he postponed the production of this venture until it healed. When it started, Vijayakanth was not available on some days because he had other commitments. For the film's climax, the producers built a set at Pattinapakkam, Chennai. It was built to look like it was situated in the backdrop of a railway station. The climax required Vijayakanth to carry actor Prabhu on his shoulder. Vijayakanth showed his expertise as a stage performer and completed the shoot with ease. After "Panchatanthiram", Vijayakanth had appeared on all Tamil films' first night posters as a promotional tactic. This time he changed his strategy and promoted himself as a producer first before acting in films, by featuring his picture on the first day of this film's distribution instead of appearing as an actor. cfa1e77820
